The Superbus project is a research programme by TU Delft directed towards a future sustainable public transport system. It consists of an electrically powered bus in which the velocity of a high speed train and the flexibility of a car are combined. Safety is a critical issue. A system capable to sense / detect the various target vehicles and potential obstacles around the vehicle is being designed for combination of human and automated control. This paper illustrates the development / integration of a fully operational obstacle detection and collision avoidance system to be implemented on the Superbus platform to obtain a high level of safety and security by multi-technology / multi-sensor characteristics. The here-given approach can be of interest in various automotive application areas.
