The research and development of self-ignition engines presently focuses on the reduction of the emission of toxic gases and on saving fuels. This can be reached by use of fuel injectors fitted with a fuel preheating system directly into the injector body and equipped with devices for the preliminary catalytic fuel treatment. Combining the thermal and catalytic methods of fuel treatment was studied. The study was carried out at the brake test stand. A 2-cylinder self-ignition engine (rated power 8.8 kW, 1500 rpm, piston diameter 85 mm, piston stroke 110 mm) with vortex combustion chamber was used. The stand was equipped with stroboscope and consisted in recording the jet stream of fuel injected. The catalyst was deposited by electrodischarge alloying and ion implementation. The thermal and catalytic pretreatment of the fuel resulted in a reduction of unit fuel consumption as well as in a decrease in the amount of toxic emissions into the environment.
