This paper summarizes ArcelorMittal latest developments in the field of coated PHS (Press Hardened Steel) based LWB (Laser Welded Blanks). Brand new PHS steel named Ductibor 500P has been developed to enlarge the range of LWB applications in combination with Usibor 1500P. First, the specific process developed by ArcelorMittal R&D to take full advantage of coated PHS-based LWB concepts is presented with an emphasis on resulting static and dynamic properties of laser welded parts. Mass analysis and crash simulations results for several applications are presented and analyzed: thanks to the outstanding mechanical properties of Usibor 1500P, the thickness distribution achieved by tailoring, mass saving is very significant and at the same time, crash performances are improved, what was proven through two different crash tests on a Usibor 1500P LWB door-ring: European Side and Frontal Impacts. On top of those results, thanks to the new Ductibor 500P PHS that is also presented in this paper, a new range of applications has been opened for parts designed to absorb energy by plastic deformation. It is the case for front and rear rails.
