For building up a body in white architecture there are many different solutions in the car making industry. Such as modules, space frame or - mostly chosen - the standard shell structure. Costs, weight and timing are - right next to the technology - the major topics running a design- and production project, building up a new body in white or complete vehicle. Keeping a single focus on the body in white - the Wilhelm Karmann GmbH in Osnabrück Germany and the Salzgitter AG in Salzgitter Germany - are cooperating together for an innovative engineering and development project - a scalable steel space frame for the body in white. The project's aim is to show the cost, weight and performance benefits that can be achieved by using an intelligent use of design-, structure-, material- and production combination. ScaLight - a future orientated offer to the customers and OEM's of the car building industry shows weight reduction for steel space frame in comparison to a standard shell structure of up to 20 %, reduction of the product costs up to 10 % and reduction of the invest up to 20 %.
