Headlight systems are developed in order to optimize the trade-off between road illumination and glare of oncoming traffic. Future headlight systems are thought to be addressable to generate light functions like marking light or glare-free high beam. There are several systems in development, which use new technologies like digital mirror device (DMD) or new light sources like light emitting diode (LED). These systems are of interest for future work, but today they are more expensive and less efficient than conventional headlamps. The intension of this work was to develop a headlamp system based on a high efficient HID projection system, which enables us to shape the light distribution and to cut-off light only in the direction of oncoming traffic. A HID projection system is combined with high variable shutters driven by innovative actuators. These actuators realize very fast switching times of approx. 20 ms. Furthermore, nearly 1000 steps are realized between high and low beam for every single shutter, due to the small step size of the actuator. The segmented shutter headlamp represents a new concept of active lighting with a superior vertical- and a sufficient horizontal resolution. It offers an excellent solution to realize glare-free high beam and marking light, with marginal system complexity and low costs. Currently improved prototypes of the segmented shutter headlamp are built in our test car in order to investigate the benefits of the system under real traffic conditions. In combination with modern sensor systems they showed the enormous potential of this new lighting philosophy. For that purpose we use an intelligent camera and LIDAR based sensor system, which analyses the traffic situation and controls the segmented shutter headlamps. The proposed headlamp system solves the design conflict between high illumination of the road and low glare; this will result in increased traffic safety.
