Over the past decade, the trend in military vehicle design has been to make smaller, lighter, more transportable systems. However, recent developments in the Middle East conflicts are forcing vehicle manufacturers to add more armour. In an effort to keep weight down, yet to still be responsive to the military's need for improved protection, vehicle manufacturers are using more non-traditional armour materials such as composites. Applications of composite materials to vehicle armour fall into two broad categories, spall liner and structural armour. The objective of the spall liner is to reduce the amount and limit the path of the lethal particles that penetrate the vehicle's hull. One of the most widely used spall liner materials is AGY's patented S-2 Glass Phenolic Composite Armour System, commonly called HJ1. The largest application of HJ1 spall liner to date is in the up-armoured HMMWV (High Mobility Multi Wheeled Vehicle). NP Aerospace of Coventry, UK, has been using the HJ1 material for many years. The original designs using S-2 Glass fibres allowed the armour to be about half the weight of steel. S-2 Glass fibres are 40 % stronger than e-glass, have a 20 % higher modulus, and are fully compatible with a broad range of matrix materials, including epoxies, vinyl esters, and thermoplastics. AGY is a leading global producer of fibreglass yarns and high strength fibreglass reinforcements. Headquartered in Aiken, SC (U.S.), AGY has a European office in Lyon, France.
