In this work, an experimental methodology for the study of the effects of the strain-rate on the mechanical behavior of metallic sheets, in particular steel sheets, was presented. Dynamic tensile tests on sheet metals are becoming more and more important for the need, of the automotive industry, of much more optimized analysis in the field of the vehicle passive safety. The sensibility to the strain-rate (the resistance increases with the strain-rate) offers a potential improvement of the energy absorption during the impact. The used equipments, two of which properly developed and constructed in the Reliability and Safety Laboratory of the 2nd Engineering Faculty of the Politecnico di Torino specifically for performing tests at high strain-rate, were presented. The adopted solutions, compared with the constructive, measuring and data acquisition problems typical of such kind of tests were discussed. The data elaboration was applied, as for example, to the characterization of two sheet steels with different resistance and thickness (2 and 2.5 mm).
