In sailing yacht production and in the special ship building industry fundamental problems do exist for highly stressed applications of fibre compound plastics (FCP) when designing load-demanded joints between structures of glass fibre reinforced plastic (GRP) and metal (steel, aluminium), especially when different material properties and functional characteristics of the joints meet. The paper presents research findings for an existing yacht construction in which the GRP backbone was replaced by a steel construction. The joining, material and FE(Finite Element) investigations necessary for this purpose are carried out in the frame ofa research proje ct together with a known yacht manufacturer, and they support the development offunction and cost optimised seagoing yachts.
