Silicon carbide square tiles of four sizes and two different thicknesses have been bonded to polycarbonate layers to evaluate their performance using a conventional DoP (depth of penetration) technique. Four tile sizes were tested: 85 mm, 60 mm, 50 mm and 33 mm. In each case the residual depth-of-penetration into the polycarbonate was recorded. It was found that if the core was shattered, the depth-of-penetration reduced considerably with increasing tile size. If the core remained intact after completely penetrating the ceramic then tile size had no effect on residual penetration. A simple elastic wave propagation model can be used to predict the experimental results quite well. The effect of tile size has been studied on two silicon-carbide-faced polymer targets. It was found that: The measured DoP after completely penetrating 6.35-mm and 7.5-mm thick Morgan AM & T PS-5000 is dependent on the tile size. For both thicknesses of this tile the effect of the border was insignificant at a proximity of impact of approximately 30-35 mm. Consequently, the minimum square tile-size that should be used so that the intrinsic ballistic properties of this material can be tested is 70 mm x 70 mm. The PS-5000 out-performed the LPS SiC ballistically in the DoP-test configuration. The LPS SiC 7.5-mm thick tile showed no variation of ballistic performance with tile size. The projectile penetrated in a rigid-body fashion. Had a thick enough tile been used to shatter the projectile core it is expected that the size-effect behaviour would become apparent in the results as it did with the PS-5000. Border effects are important when the ceramic material is able to induce shattering in the projectile core. In this study, border effects are not important when the armour is overmatched and the projectile penetrates in a rigid-body fashion. The border-effect can be predicted by a simplified elastic wave-speed model.
