The shot peening is widely used as a method for surface treatment of railroad wheels to improve their quality. The results of authors' own studies on shot peening the P40 steel surface were briefly reviewed. The peening was performed with cut steel wire shot (diameter 0.6 mm) under 6 atm for 0.5 min and resulted in an increase in the surface hardness and initial stress. The shot peening is successfully used by Bonatrans company for the treatment of rail vehicle wheels and axles. The treatment of axle surface was found of an advantage before their molydenum spraying to enhance the adherence of the molybdenum layer. The shot-peened wheels showed an increased load-carrying capacity (by 50%).
