The Polish directions for designing, construction and modernization of railway stock to meet the needs of disabled individuals in wheelchairs as well as to allow and faciliate them the travelling by rail were presented. The requirements are in agreement with recomendations of International Union of Railways. They are concerned with sizes of car alleways (more than 800 mm), compartment doors (850 mm to 1100 mm, depending on the corridor width) and lavatories (adapted to the wheelchair width), absence of sharp edges as well as positioning of door handles (1000 mm to 1100 mm above the floor). The requirements are met by the Polish State Rail Companies during the modernization of railway stock and during construction of the new railway cars and articulaited trains. A hoist for wheelchairs was also designed and constructed.
