Increasing complexity of future vehicle cooling systems leads to a need for enhanced simulation software to simulate the interactions of the cooling system with the vehicle for a wide range of operation conditions. A thermodynamic simulation model has to be build up to simulate all air, fluid and energy flows having an impact on cooling system performance. In parallel the demands for the measurement technology are rising as the simulation models must be validated by wind tunnel measurements. Future cooling systems need to be optimized for thermally critical operating conditions but they also need to meet the requirements for passenger comfort and for heating-up of the engine and exhaust after treatment components at cold start. Changes in the thermal management of a vehicle also have an influence on fuel consumption. This paper describes measurement technologies being developed and used to measure temperatures, pressures and flow rates in the vehicle during wind tunnel tests. Furthermore a simulation tool for the thermal analysis of a truck cooling system is presented. It consists of multiple subsystem models to simulate the cooling air duct, the coolant circuit, charge air and exhaust gas circuit as well as engine and power train. The subsystem models are linked using Simulink Simulation results are shown and compared to the results from wind tunnel measurements. A new measurement technology was utilized in the wind tunnel to measure the non-homogeneous air flow velocities and the air flow rate in the radiator core. In order to validate the measured cooling air flow rates, the cooling module, with the Micro Probes, will be mounted in the Modine calorimeter. The measured cooling air flow rates will then be compared to the presetting of the chamber. A final statement about the accuracy of the Micro Probes measurement can then be made.
