This overview paper draws the connection between prospective engineering and design metaphors. The H-Metaphor is introduced, that takes a natural means of transportation as an inspiration for vehicle automation and interaction. Based on this metaphor, the H-Mode is under development, a haptic-multimodal language for the intuitive interaction between a human and a highly automated vehicle. The ongoing work in the H-Mode projects at DLR and NASA Langley are briefly summarized. Exemplarily, a combined longitudinal and lateral assistance with lane keeping, lane departure and speed assistance is described. Finally, the next steps of the teams are sketched.
