Meanwhile Tier III is settled in most standard tractors. In front of the engineering and developing process there were seen significant negative impacts like higher heat rejection, higher fuel consumption, higher project cost and strange impacts on the tractor design. The consequence all of this was a significant collision with the customers expectations and market demands on a high sophisticated tractor. Beside of this the effective way and the technological strategy to a tractor based solution were very open. Different solutions were in discussion without clear preference. In a close relationship between engine and tractor manufacturer the final solution with a new Common Rail System combined with an external cooled Exhaust Gas Recirculation (ecEGR) was decided and developed to series production. The Tier III series solution meets the defined engineering targets. The new Tier III- tractors offers now better engine and operation performance with lower fuel consumption compared with Tier II. The upcoming Tier IV regulations are much more challenging. Nevertheless the engineering task will be that we can continue to offer our customers a high quality product meeting the market requirements and the emission legislation. The industry has to overcome the technical, organisational and cost issues and to provide an affordable product.
