Recently, many conventional mechanical systems have been replaced by electromechanical system in the industries because those induce a reduction of the life time by an abrasion and a noise. Eddy current braking systems are a representing case of the electromechanical system and those are applied to the braking system of high speed railway and the damping devices of adventure rides at the family park. In this paper, the eddy current braking system is applied for a magnetic damper for a shockabsorbing from a crash accident of high speed vehicles. The magnetic damper is composed of a conductive plate, a yoke and permanent magnets which are constructed to Halbach array to improve the damping force. The damping forces to design the magnetic damper are calculated by using J-Mag, commercial FEA tool and those are validated by the experiment. Also the optimization of the rotating plate to get the high damping force is accomplished by changing the material type of those. Proved reduced model represented using the rotary magnetic damper is expanded to the real linear model. Finally, the design of the linear magnetic damper proposed in this research can be applied to real magnetic damper.
