ContiSeal is a system which enables the capability of a standard tire to seal-off air leakage caused by puncturing objects up to 5 mm in diameter occurring in the tread area. Puncture resistance is thus improved under these conditions. ContiSeal is an additional air-proof polymer layer which is only a few millimeters thick and applied directly inside a tire. This layer has very different material characteristics compared to the usual materials used in tire construction. In order to ensure a certain level of sealing performance, this material must have a certain minimum level of flow behavior. At the same time, to ensure that the layer stays in place inside the tire and does not creep, there is a given maximum acceptable level of flow behavior. Material and design parameters such as the degree of cross linking, the sealant formulation and the layer thickness can be used to influence sealant flow behavior but these can also have an impact on sealing performance. Also external parameters such as ambient temperature and the centrifugal and radial forces seen inside the tire can also influence the flow behavior. This presentation will elaborate on the methods and tools used by Continental to optimize the flow behavior of our sealant in order to achieve the best balance between sealing performance and creeping behavior. These are evaluated under the different above mentioned external parameters.
