EURO3 motorcycles emission limit involves an electronic control of fuelling and ignition system, in order to optimize combustion and exhaust aftertreatment processes without affecting the performance. Electronic engine management is also needed to address market requirements such as low consumption, drive comfort and good cold running. At the same time, cost saving issues are becoming more and more important for small two wheelers. Scooter, moped and small motorbikes are mainly used for urban and/or youth mobility, with limited budget available compared to bigger motorbikes. So, the additional cost of the engine due for the EURO3 must be reduced as much as possible, with the respect of performance target. On the other hand, sporty off-road motorbikes ask for simply and lightweight EURO3 systems. The engine management must accomplish kickstart, battery-less operation without the needs for higher inertia alternator and bulky fuel pump, saving weight, space, robustness, performance and, not least, without any major modification to existing vehicles. In this scenario Dell'Orto proposes a low cost electronic engine management system, designed and developed for single cylinder two wheeler engines. The Electronic Carburetion System (ECS) offer a fully integrated management of carburetion, ignition and lubrication. A/F and ignition control allows quick start catalyst after cold starting as well as improved vehicle driveability. The electronically controlled lubrication pump further reduce emissions, oil consumption and prevent catalyst deterioration. The ECS concept, design, integration, calibration and validation is presented. The technology demo 50cc scooter that accomplish the current EURO3 is described. This developments leads to the first mass production, electronically controlled, 6-speed 50cc 2-stroke engine. More over, the ECS technology applied on a 6-speed 125cc represent the first EURO3 compliant 2- stroke engine available on the market Last, but not least, the Dell Orto Electronic Carburetion System will be the platform for the development of novel electronic control system, tailored to the motorcycles needs
