The development of safety relevant systems for the railway domain is more than ever determined by extensive feature lists, not necessarily exhaustive specifications and lengthy approval processes. This article outlines the idea of a joint UML-based system and test model which offers numerous advantages (consistency, requirements tracing, formal description) for any system development. The combined model comprises a system description based on SysML (systems modeling language), which is a UML profile for systems engineering. The testing description is implemented using the UML 2 testing profile (U2TP). Along with evaluation scripts (e. g. for coverage examinations), such a homogeneous model can significantly improve and speed up the development process.
