A specific avionic electrical contact, composed by a connector and a cable embedded in lead-free solder paste, had been soldered using a doubled-frequency Nd:YAG laser. The aim here is to compare the laser soldered and crimped contacts in terms of electrical resistivity and tensile mechanical strength. The temperature evolution during laser heating was measured using a thermocouple in the place of the cable. Three laser powers were used 7.3, 9.3 and 10.1W, with respective soldering times of 10, 5 and 5 minutes. The maximum temperatures for the three experimental conditions were near to the liquidus temperature for the solder paste. In one case, using 10W power and 5min soldering time, the tensile strength is much higher than the crimped contacts and the electrical resistance was maintained well below the acceptable limit. Other experiments with lower heating gradient and reduced soldering time, few seconds, also presented such high mechanical toughness and low electrical resistivity.
