The different model matching approaches (Exact, PIM (Pseudo-Inverse Method), NPIM (Modified Pseudo-Inverse Method)) are analyzed for the fault tolerant control of the short-period mode of the longitudinal model of the Boeing 747 aircraft. To overcome the drawbacks of the PIM and MPIM approaches, a new philosophy is proposed for the model matching problem, namely to use a set of admissible models instead of trying to best approximate a single reference one. The application shows the benefits associated with using this approach.
