The paper gives first a brief definition of MiL and SiL as well as for Virtual Prototyping. Additionally it is shown how MiL/SiL is linked to AUTOSAR concepts. The major part discusses trends to move more and more activities from vehicle based calibration to pre-calibration on HiL systems, test beds and now to virtual prototyping systems. Not only pre-calibration is of interest for the ECU supplier but also equivalence tests between an executable specification from the OEM and the implemented software of the ECU supplier. Equivalence tests can ensure on one side better understanding respectively less misunderstanding/misinterpretation of written specifications and on the other side the differences introduced when switch from MiL to SiL. We will outline a solution that is able to handle simultaneously different modelling tools (for functional specification, for software development and for environment modelling) and which ensures that OEMs and ECU suppliers can co-work more easily and more efficient together. More efficient co-working means that each of the development partners can use 'his' tools but it means also that the results created with different modelling tools or maybe by switching from MiL to SiL will be easily comparable. This makes it easy to identify which step in the development introduces which problem or even more important reveal which part of the specification is not precise enough. The solution can help to reduce cost and development time especially through avoidance of errors and therefore needed correction loops. The solution will also help to increase SW quality through intensive and automatic testing of more if not all software variants. Finally an outlook to future enhancements and applications is given.
