One of the main topics involved in high speed train operation is the current collection, performed by means of a pantograph in contact with a overhead line. The mean contact force applied by the preload given by a spring, or air spring, and by the aerodynamic mean uplift is disturbed by the dynamic interaction between the pantograph and the contact wire. As a consequence the quality of current collection is influenced by the actual value of the contact force. The work is based on an experimental campaign carried out with a laboratory test bench allowing to investigate the contact interactions between contact wire and collecotr strip under current transfer up to 1200 A d.c. and speed up to 200 km/h. Contact strip vertical acceleration and voltage drop across the contact region were measured with the aim of detecting arc occurrences and finding correlations between the two signals. The exam of the probability distribution of the voltage drop revealed the presence of an asymmetry emphasized by arching intensity; an index characterising this asymmetry was found to be correlated with the r.m.s. value of the contact strip vertical acceleration, providing a first direct relation between two global parameters associated with current collection quality and the contact dynamic quality. As a second step the frequency response was investigated: high values of the coherence function between the vertical acceleration of the contact strip and the voltage drop were found for frequencies corresponding to the flexible modes of the contact strip and to the passage under droppers.
