Laser beam welding is one key factor, which strengthened the position of metals (especially aluminium) in civil aircraft manufacturing. Although laser beam welding is known for significant less distortion the occurring contour deviations have negative influence on assembling and aerodynamics. Therefore extensive effort is necessary for reshaping and consequently the aim of today's development is the minimization of distortion. Running investigations show that the complex manufacturing chain necessitates a system-orientated view. During these investigations it could be proved that the production of cylindrical sheets is more critical in view of distortion than spherical sheets. This was derived from the analysis of the process chain and approved by distortion measurements after several manufacturing steps.
