Particulate matter air pollution has seemed to level off, and in recent years it has shown a gradual reduction tendency, which increased the attainment rate of environmental quality standards at air pollution monitoring stations. However, the rate still remains under 100% attainment. For diesel vehicles, exhaust aftertreatment devices have been developed and improved with the implementation of stringent emissions regulations, and thus, a significant reduction in PM emissions has been observed. In Japan, the Central Environment Council recommended the application of a PM emissions standard to lean-burn in-cylinder DI gasoline engine vehicles that would be equivalent to that for diesel vehicles from 2009. The effect of fuel properties on particulate matter (PM) emissions from a lean-burn DI gasoline vehicle was investigated with respect to aromatic hydrocarbon content and distillation characteristics. The test fuels were prepared as follows: blending toluene into regular gasoline; adjusting aromatics content to the same level of the test fuels for an effect evaluation of aromatics; and blending ETBE or ethanol. High PM emission were observed under low average vehicle speed conditions such as driving on congested roads and under high load conditions such as large acceleration. Within variation ranges of commercial gasoline components, aromatic hydrocarbon content impacts PM emissions more remarkably than distillation characteristics. It was also confirmed that the higher the carbon number of aromatic hydrocarbons, the higher the PM emissions. In the case of oxygenated gasoline, PM emissions were reduced under driving conditions such as congested roads, however, no reduction effect was observed under other driving conditions.
