A transmission concept which is currently getting a lot of attention in the automotive world is the double clutch transmission (DCT). As the name already indicates, the wet clutches used in such a DCT are crucial components. The fact that these wet clutches have to combine several functions, not only acting as drive-away clutch, but also being used in complex overlap control algorithms that provide smooth shifting, leads to high requirements on the clutch and its controls. This paper focuses on the requirements on DCT clutches and their controls for optimisation of Drive Away. It also presents the tools HDM used to accomplish success in DA (Drive Away). The first step towards a good DA is a control algorithm that balances the limitations of the clutch and the engine. To deliver the desired torque, the hydraulic system has to be able to build up the desired clutch pressure very fast. This paper presents the simulations (in ITI-sim) and real-life tests that were run to evaluate and improve the performance of each hydraulic component as well as of the hydraulic system as a whole. To make sure that the driver always has control over the torque at the wheels, we also determined the pressure required to deliver a given torque under a wide range of situations. This paper presents the different measurement setups that were used to do that. DA also results in high thermo-mechanical requirements on the clutch due to the high thermal load. Simulations in Matlab were run to see the effect of DA on the temperature in the clutch. Also FEM simulations of the clutch were run to see the pressure distribution at the clutch plates. This paper gives an overview of the effect of this on the design. The paper also describes that the DA optimisation is a global optimisation of the clutch and its controls rather than an optimisation of the individual components.
