Today's multi colour head-up displays (HUDs) are usually based an TFT displays with LEDs as light sources. New developments in the area of laser sources and micromechanical mirror scanners enable now the implementation of laser projectors as image sources with excellent characteristics concerning contrast and colour gamut. This article describes the architecture and the special characteristics of Laser-HUDs, in particular the differences to display-based HUDs. From the perspective of the authors the most important advantages of a HUD based an laser projection compared to display based systems are the very high contrast ratio. Because of the principle, the contrast values are above the measurable limit, but due to the lenses and other effects they are reduced typically to 1000:1, which results in a brilliant image without disturbing background, even in a dark surrounding and wich a relatively high HUD luminance. Display based HUDs reach values at about 150:1. The colour space is much larger than it is for display based systems. For red-green systems it is possible to display much stronger red and green hues and also the saturation of mixed colours is much higher. For most operation conditions the power dissipation is much lower for typical HUD Images, because the lasers have to be activated just for about 10 % of the time. Further advantages are the electronic warping of the image to compensate distortions of the optical path. The high contrast hides the inversely distorted background. The blanked image area does not require any additional power for the illumination. An increase of the resolution to avoid aliasing effects can be realized with less effort and nearly without a loss of efficiency.
