Due to the need to significantly reduce the part weights in automotive manufacturing, the use of lightweight materials becomes ever more important. Unfortunately, these materials are often associated with a limited cold formability. Due to this fact, production of large, complex sheet metal components using forming technology frequently entails increased expenditures. Moreover, processing high-strength materials requires correspondingly high processing forces and pressures. In order to find a solution to counter the disadvantages mentioned above, the use of elevated temperatures as a process parameter in forming operations represents a potential solution approach. The following paper will give an overview about research activities in the field of forming operations at elevated temperatures. Findings from the investigations carried out lead to the conclusion that the use of temperature in the materials systems under examination results in a significant improvement in forming characteristics. This is crucial for the successful manufacture of sheet components with complex geometries. The different influences of elevated temperatures on the properties and the forming behavior of the materials require material-related and process-related forming temperatures as well as an appropriate temperature regime, including suitable heating and cooling strategies. This is essential for a maximum exploitation of the potentials of temperature-supported forming processes concerning: extension of forming limits; minimization of forming forces and pressures; guarantee of required part accuracy and characteristics. However, additional aspects, such as: the design of the forming tool; the design of the forming and heating equipment; providing of the temperatures required and appropriate temperature distributions and tribological conditions must also be taken into account.
