In this paper a method to estimate the velocity vector, including radial and lateral (cross-range) component, of extended targets is presented. The basis for the described method is the angular dependency of the radial velocity components that are measurable with a monopulse radar sensor. Using standard automotive radar sensors with high velocity resolution and the capability of azimuth angular measurements, the relevance of the proposed technique for automotive driver assistance systems is presented by means of analytical calculations and one practical measurement example.
