The DIDSON (Dual-Frequency Identification Sonar), an acoustic camera made by Sound Metrics Corporation, enables ROV (remotely operated vehicle) operators and diver crews in the Gulf of Mexico, to replace optical systems in low-visibility environments. The acoustic camera, which operates at high frequencies, ranging from 700 kilohertz to three megahertz, with an operating range that varies from one meter to 80 meters, is best used on a pan/tilt platform. DIDSON is a good identification tool, which is used to find the object within a small area and provide a positive identification. The acoustic camera allows crews to work in turbid conditions and cluttered environments with increased efficiency and safety for equipment and personnel. ROV operators find the acoustic camera useful to help navigate with precision and they use them for pictorial verification that the work is accurate and complete.
