Typical turboprop noise spectra exhibit a series of characteristic peaks which are related directly to the engine rotation speed and the number of blades. These blade passage frequencies contribute significantly to the overall sound pressure level both outside and inside the aircraft. Their contribution to cabin noise is usually reduced by appropriately adjusted mass dampers. However, since the engine rotation speed varies for different flight conditions, any fixed eigenfrequency absorber will merely be a sub-optimal compromise. Due to that active vibration damping systems are widely used in nowadays turboprop aircraft, resulting in a very high power consumption. A Piezo Tunable Vibration Absorber (PTVA) has been developed in a joint activity between DLR and OHB System AG. The device features a variable resonant frequency which allows an adaptation to the varying engine rotation speed associated with different flight conditions thus providing significantly improved performance. Frequency tuning is achieved through a pair of leaf springs subjected to an axial pressure force introduced by piezoelectric stack actuators. The approach combines a broad frequency tuning range and low power consumption. First, the theoretical background is lined out and the fundamental layout of the main functional components leaf spring, tension loop and actuation system is illustrated. Then, the design of a working unit meeting regular aerospace industry requirements is described in detail. A design optimization based on a NASTRAN numerical model was performed and a proof of concept demonstrator has been built. Subsequent experimental verification results show a good agreement between measurements and numerical analysis and confirm that the Piezo Tunable Vibration Absorber meets the requirements associated with modern high-performance turboprop aircraft.
