Power Electronics Associated Research Laboratory (PEARL) is a laboratory associating industrial and academic partners. The domain of activity is power electronics for transport application. Novel technologies are developed to design prototypes of power converters employing new concepts for the reduction of weight, volume and cost. PEARL is equipped with a pilot line to make prototype assemblies. A complete set of characterisation equipment is available for technology and prototype validation. Each associated laboratory contributes its own experience and equipment in its area of speciality.A new structure of power integrated converter is presented. These converters have been developed with standard IGBT chips and address the application of train traction drives. This new approach answers the requirement on weight, volume and cost reduction while improving the reliability. This paper presents the technology approach, the electrical characteristics of these integrated structure and some reliability aspects. A new generation of power integrated module has been developed within PEARL. All the innovative technologies have been validated under the durability aspect in railway environment. These integrated structures dramatically reduce the parasitic elements and the final characteristics are much better than the characteristics of standard power modules. A test in real commercial operation has been carried out.
