The development of high temperature wiring is critical to the condition monitoring of the components of gas turbine engine. This work describes an effort to fabricate high temperature wiring for application in engine bay. The aircraft wiring systems consist of three major components, which are the conducting wire(s), the insulating material around the conducting wires, and the outer most metal braid that provides overall mechanical integrity. The selection of conductors and insulators for fabricating complete high temperature wiring was based on the critical requirements for the intended application. Industrially accepted procedures were used to fabricate the wires and cables. The suitability of the fabricated wires was evaluated in terms of electrical and thermal characteristics. Electrical signal carrying characteristics of as-fabricated and thermally exposed wires were evaluated in dry and wet (water) atmosphere. No measurable difference in signal carrying capability was observed between as-fabricated and thermally exposed wires. Robust nature of the selected insulators was demonstrated in chafing experiment. Thermal stability of the selected wires was also evaluated. The suitability of conductors and insulators in terms of signal carrying capability, chafing resistance, thermal stability and overall robustness was demonstrated up to a temperature range of 1500 F.
