Some gas generator formulations were compared with respect to the specific requirements for application in an occupant restraint system. The basic chemical components of the formulations were selected and thermodynamic calculations performed. The formulations were evaluated concerning significant parameters e.g. specific gas yield, combustion temperature or gas composition. Promising formulations were selected for further investigation and small samples were produced for evaluation of chemical stability and safety parameters e.g. sensitivity to friction or impact. The remaining formulations were produced in larger scale and pressed in pellet shape for characterisation of the interior ballistic behaviour. Performance investigations were done with a standard combustion chamber in a 60 l can. The gas composition of the most promising formulation was characterised in a 2.5 m3 chamber according to AKLV limit concentrations.
