SCR (Selective Catalytic Redution) technology has a greater potential to equip engines for which NO(x) raw emissions are far apart from complying with regulations unassisted, especially on Light Duty Vehicles (Pick-up Trucks and SUV (Service Use Vehicle)) and larger passenger cars. The complete SCR system consists of a storage tank for the urea solution, a urea injection system and a dedicated catalyst. The Automotive Industry has fixed and standardized the urea solution characteristics, called AdBlue TM that may be applied worldwide. To comply with more stringent regulations, Europe has selected the SCR technology that has been in place since January 2005 (infrastructure, commercial introduction) and SCR technology for mobile applications became a reality. This choice is likely to be generalized on a global scale, especially in the US and Asia, on HDV (Heavy Duty Vehicle and LDV (Light Duty Vehicle) by 2010. For the US Tier2 Bin5 stage, the Automobile Industry will follow the European approach making on board fluids system integration a key success factor. The worldwide NO(x) emissions standards evolution over the 2005/2012 period forces the Automobile industry to evaluate the SCR technologies for roduction volume applications. The presentation will cover the roadmap of worldwide SCR market implementations, especially in Europe with the current commercial vehicles market segment, will review all key elements of this technology, and will give an update of he latest developments in order to implement SCR technology (urea tank) in the passenger ar market segments. This article describes in detail the regulations and generalities on a worldwide context, the impact of the regulations on technologies, the principle of SCR, the production usage and properties of the urea technology, the SCR development on HDV, LDV and PC (Personal Car) vehicles and the NO(x)/PM (Particulate Matter) integration solution for PC vehicles. The road map of the introduction of SCR in the world from a HDV application in 2005 with metallic urea tank and air dosing system to a plastic tank with airlessdosing system on HDV (2006) and LDV/PC (2008 - 2012) is presented.
