Switched-reluctance alternators are widely used in cars and trucks. The structure and operation of a switched reluctance alternator with an exciting winding on the stator and permanent magnets in the rotor slots are considered. A model for simulating the switched-reluctance system is proposed. The model permits rapid evaluation of the influence of the system components on the static and dynamic characteristics of the alternator. Analytical determination of the inductance using the model reduces the computation time. Curves of the inductance as a function of the rotor position angle obtained experimentally and by the finite-element method are presented. The model of the switched-reluetance machine permits significant improvement in the design and operation of car and truck alternators. The electromagnetic processes not only in alternators but also in switched-reluctance motors may be investigated by this method.
