The experimental investigations presented in this paper have definitely shown that the ESPI (Electronic Speckle Pattern Interferometry) measuring technique is a well suited procedure for non-destructive testing of reinforced concrete structures. Measurements obtained from a segment of a slab track of the type Rheda 2000 have clearly shown that block sleepers which are improperly bonded to the surrounding site-mixed concrete can well distinguished from those block sleepers which are fully connected. The phase maps which are directly obtained during the measurement procedure are well suited for this purpose. Moreover, cracks in the site-mixed concrete could be detected. Further investigations are necessary to get more precise information whether faults in the bonding of the reinforcements can also be detected. Promising results are obtained from a few first experiments with three dimensional ESPI-technique. It is intended to continue with these experiments to get further knowledge in analysing and interpreting the additional valuable information. Here, the main objective is to get a deeper insight the abilities and limits of this promising measurement technique with special regard to structural health monitoring of reinforced concrete structures. Further investigations focus on optimal places and types of excitation and the definition of criteria for the characterisation of faults in slab tracks which are due to manufacturing and operation. A mobile test laboratory for in situ tests of slab tracks and general concrete constructions has been built. This equipment will be used for experimental investigations beyond those on slab tracks.
