The output characteristics of tread rubbers, which affect the main service properties of tyres (rolling losses, road holding, and wear resistance), are determined by their elastic hysteresis properties, which are estimated in the corresponding frequency and temperature ranges. In turn, to assess the elastic hysteresis properties of tread rubbers, wide use is made of the mechanical loss tangent, which is the ratio of the modulus of losses to the real component of the complex modulus. On the basis of studying the correlation relationships of the output characteristics of tyres with the elastic hysteresis properties of the rubbers, it was established that the mechanical loss tangent, determined at temperatures ranging from -20 to-10 deg C, characterises the grip of tyres with ice and with snow-covered road surfaces. The higher the tangent, the poorer is the grip, since, with a high loss tangent and a low temperature, rubbers lose their elasticity and undergo glass transition. The investigations were conducted on tread rubbers based on solution-polymerised styrene-butadiene rubbers (S-SBRs), emulsion-polymerised styrene-butadiene rubbers (E-SBRs), and butadiene rubbers of different structure, and also rubbers based on S-SBRs with different contents of carbon black and silicate filler. Tyres have been manufactured and bench and laboratory road tests have been carried out, which confirm the conclusions obtained from analysis of the temperature dependences of the mechanical loss tangent.
