In this paper the applicability of different optical measurement techniques for species and temperature detection in internal combustion engines is discussed, especially for hydrogen combustion. The presented techniques cover the flame luminosity, the laser-induced fluorescence (LIF), laser Rayleigh scattering, spontaneous Raman scattering and non-linear Raman measurement techniques like coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering. The potential of the 2-dimensional detection of hydrogen via spontaneous Raman scattering is discussed. Because of the spectral properties of hydrogen and its combustion products, hydrogen engines offer ideal conditions for applying different optical measurement techniques. Considering tracer LIF, Rayleigh scattering, Raman scattering and flame luminosity, no signal interferences have to be worried about. Under the condition of temperature homogeneity inside the combustion chamber, 2-dimensional standard techniques like LIF and Rayleigh may be applied to detect the species number density or the fuel/air-ratio. Under the condition of temperature inhomogeneities inside the combustion chamber, more comprehensive LIF techniques must be applied to simultaneously detect the temperature and the species number density or the fuel/air-ratio. The 1-dimensional spontaneous Raman technique has the potential to detect the ratio of the number density of all mayor species simultaneously. The 2- dimensional spontaneous Raman technique suffers from weak signal levels. Therefore it is still under way to overcome these problems. New camera generations and more powerful lasers will contribute to the future possibility of detecting species number density, even if there are temperature inhomogeneities.
