MAN Nutzfahrzeuge has been working on the development of hydrogen engines since 1992. The first result of development work was the bifuel engine H2866 UH01, which could be switched over between petrol and hydrogen operation. This was a naturally aspirated Otto engine with a maximum power output of 140 kW that ran at an approximately stoichiometric air/fuel ratio. A reducing catalyst cleaned the exhaust gases. In the second development step petrol operation was dispensed with and the ME7GAS1 engine control unit was introduced. The third development step for the engine entailed raising the power output to 150 kW by enlarging the displacement. Series production of this engine is planned from 2007 onwards. The engines are used to power buses. In various demonstration projects hydrogen buses with MAN internal-combustion engines have covered over 400,000 km. A more powerful engine rated at 200 kW is currently being developed. This is a turbocharged engine with internal mixture formation. The hydrogen is blown into the combustion chamber at low pressure (below 15) bar through special injectors. From 2007 onwards this engine is to be tested in several city buses as part of the EU's HyFleet:Cute project. In the medium term MAN is considering development work on a hydrogen engine which uses the diesel principle. An argument in favour of the introduction of hydrogen is the possibility of low-pollutant combustion: as the fuel itself is carbon-free, no harmful hydrocarbon compounds (HC emissions), no carbon monoxide (CO emissions) and no carbon dioxide (CO2 emissions) are generated. If suitable measures are taken the generation of oxides of nitrogen (NOx emissions) and particulates (PM) can be reduced to a minimum. If the hydrogen is obtained using regenerative energy, only a small amount of carbon dioxide is generated by transport and storage. In this way hydrogen can make a major contribution to reducing the release of carbon dioxide, which has a harmful effect on the climate.
