In passenger vehicles the ability to absorb impact energy and be survivable for the occupant is called the 'crashworthiness' of the structure. Composite materials find extensive use as crash energy absorbers. While many scientists have investigated the crashworthiness of various fiber-reinforced composites, there has been little or no effort to study the performance of these materials when they are used in a bonded structure. From a review of the existing literature and own studies of automotive crashworthiness, it can be concluded that the energy absorption performance of composite bonded structures may vary with loading rate. Therefore, the focus of this work was to experimentally investigate the influence of having a bonded joint within the crush zone of a composite structure. Tests were conducted under quasi-static and dynamic loads for carbon fiber epoxy composites, adhesives (epoxy), and adhesive joints (coupon and tubes). The results from these tests provide part of the necessary experimental data for analyzing and designing adhesively bonded automotive composite structures. An overall objective of this work was to establish an experimental methodology that would promote a building block approach to model development - first at the coupon level, then progressing in complexity to component level. As part of the effort to continually report to the scientific community the results obtained from this experimental approach, some of the past results already having made their way to literature, this paper summarizes the most recent results obtained.
