This paper is focused on analysis of field data for developing rail wear prediction model. It has proposed a rail wear prediction model, which looks into area loss/MGT due to traffic and grinding wear as a function of MGT, track length and curve radius. It also looks into costs related to the rail-wheel wear as annuity, risk, safety, noise grinding, maintenance and replacement of worn-out rails and wheels. Field data has been collected and analysed for wear rate for high rail and lubrication effectiveness and for different curve radius. Rail size is analysed for impact on rail area head loss. There is huge scope on future work on developing best curve and worst curve models based on change of wear rate with MGT. The wear limit can be also analysed linking various costs and risks. Detail study can include track standards, wear limits, safety and risk cost, and savings.
