The MAPS and ADAS subproject of the integrated project PReVENT, sponsored by the European Commission under the 6th Framework Research Programme, develops and validates a standard map interface for advanced driver assistance systems. The accident hot spot warning application is a pilot to prove the concept and illustrate the potential of enhancing ADAS applications with map and location based information. It requires the development of a safety map containing information on accident hot spots and risk exposure related to network links. While driving, a warning algorithm will continually compare the current environmental and vehicle conditions with the map information and warn the driver when surpassing an unacceptable risk threshold. Several methodological challenges will be tackled like the identification of true accident hot spots, actuality of the electronic map database, vehicle path prediction, the warning algorithm and the design of the human machine interface.
