In this study, carsickness of rear-seat passengers induced by watching an in-vehicle display was investigated under the assumpition that such display is for a rear-seat entertainment system. Results of field tests showed that gazing at a display screen in a moving car induced a significant degree of carsickness. The mechanism of carsickness and a method for reducing such sickness caused by watching an in-vehicle display were examined. It was found that compensation of the pitch of displayed images due to the vehicle's motion and removal of relative motion between the head and the display by means of image collimation were both beneficial in reducing carsickness caused by gazing at an in-vehicle display.
