In this paper is given an overview of thermopile based infrared sensor applications for automotive comfort and safety. For each of the different applications, the sensor requirements have been discussed and a number of practical considerations related to the practical use of infrared sensors in the automotive environment have been discussed. The application of infrared thermopile sensors as the comfort sensor for air conditioning systems in several car modeis has shown that a mature, reliable technology is now available. Further advances in integration technology will result in an even more versatile and cost effective technology with widespread automotive and non-automotive applications.
