With the introduction of the first commercial hybrid electric vehicle (HEV), Toyota has marked a new era wherein most automakers are working hard to introduce affordable cars into the market. These vehicles, in comparison to conventional cars, are characterised by a comparable, or even improved, drive performance, and by reduced fuel consumption and exhaust emissions. The reliability of electric double layer capacitors is an important issue for wide scale introduction to the automotive market. The life time of electric double layer capacitors has already been demonstrated under standard laboratory conditions. However, the long-term mechanical stress caused by severe ambient vehicle conditions requires a deeper investigation into these effects on the performance of electric double layer capacitors. The paper presents an evaluation procedure and applies it to various manufacturers' electric double layer capacitors (ELDC). The overall result of this test showed that on a short-time basis, there is not a strong relationship between mechanical stress and electrical performance. The internal resistance and capacitance variations of the capacitors are around a few percent, and an analytic relationship cannot be defined. Further tests are needed to better clarify of the relationship between mechanical stress and supercapacitor performance, with particular attention paid to the influence of lifecycle. In a few cases a small capacity decrease has been observed, which might be the result of accelerated ageing. The investigation has resulted in useful information about the parameter estimation for EDLC modelling purposes, but the potential ageing due to the mechanical stress could not be determined definitively. More tests should be done in this area for determining the effective vibration stress influence on the calendar life and the cycle life.
