It is shown how quality and reliability requirements of mechatronic automotive systems can be systematically determined and fulfilled. In order to achieve single-digit ppm quality and reliability over the vehicles lifetime, several conditions must be met. This is a full understanding of operating and environmental conditions of the application. The lifetime behaviour and limiting failure mechanisms of the selected electronic components, assembly and connection technologies must be thoroughly understood. Matching of the application requirements and the used technological capabilities must be proven both from simulation and physical test experiments, covering the lifetime of the product. All electronic and mechanic components must comply with their specific quality targets. As an example, the implementation of a mechatronic control unit for an electric steering system is given. It is shown, that reliability requirements under tough environmental conditions can be fulfilled in using LTCC Low Temperature Cofired Ceramics) hybrid technology. The described 'Design for Reliability Process' allows systematic design of control units regarding their long term reliability. In general, LTCC based control units allow for higher reliability under tough conditions, thus supporting more robust applications. For this reason we recommend it over PCB (Directly Bonded Copper) based control units for electronic power steering control units as well as for other applications with tough operating conditions and high reliability requirements.
