Technical systems become more and more complex, therefore it is increasingly important to collaborate in an interdisciplinary way when analyzing such systems. For example hydraulic systems for automotive applications bring up questions that affect and are affected by the automotive system. Initiated by the BMW AG, IFAS and ika put an effort to test and improve such interdisciplinary research. A hydraulic phenomenon that is well known among automotive manufacturers was elected to be analyzed in a cooperative research project. The phenomenon occurs when the inner wheel of a cornering car rolls over an obstacle. In this situation a repetitive impulsive, high-frequent pressure pulsation can be observed. In the following it is labeled as rattling. In order to achieve this behaviour it is necessary to modify a series-production vehicle. The task was to analyze a modified power steering system that shows an impulsive pressure pulsation phenomenon when conducting a special driving maneuver. The excitation parameters that are necessary to obtain the hydraulic event were measured at the ika. The measurement results were used to build and run a hydraulic test bench at the IFAS to reproduce the phenomenon. The test bench provides better accessibility to several measuring points. More detailed understanding was achieved using the hydraulic simulation tool DSHplus. The simulation enables the observation of variables that are difficult or impossible to measure physically. A theory was established in the simulation domain and proved by modifications of the steering system at the test bench as well as in the car.
