Novel, non-halogenated, engineering thermoplastic materials have been developed that can meet the ISO 6722 standard for automotive wire and cable. By using a novel compatibilization strategy, an alloy of poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4- phenylene ether) (PPE) and polyolefin is used to make a new wire coating resin. Consistent with the trend of the automotive industry to move towards environmentally friendly materials, this alloy is halogen free and recyclable. Moreover, it has some design, performance, and potential installed cost advantages that make it a very attractive alternative. This paper discusses the technology and the unique benefits offered by flexible PPE-polyolefin alloys. Another advantage is that flexible PPE-polyolefin alloys have a specific gravity around 1.0, whereas PVC and cross-linked polyolefin formulations have a specific gravity typically above 1.30. This difference can lead to significant weight savings. In addition, the excellent abrasion resistance of PPE-polyolefin resins enables the possibility of thinner insulation resulting in more weight savings and a smaller bundle diameter.
