Carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) composite materials are attractive for advanced structural applications but the utilization of composite structures has been limited to a large degree by their affordability. Significant improvements in composite affordability can realized through improved processing techniques, large unitized structure designs and bonding. These processes are challenging NDE development in a number of areas. The unitized structure design concepts are creating large structural configurations with considerable geometric complexity. NDE solutions that are simple, but can handle the geometry effects and material coverage at high speed are needed. Quality assurance of the bonding process and acceptance of the completed bond that will assure bond strength are key elements to composite structure applications.
