The aim of the investigation is to push forward the limits in view of welding speed and material thickness nowadays set e.g. by lamp- and diode-pumped Nd:YAG-Lasers. Therefore, the basic welding performance of the three high-power fiber lasers YLR-7000, YLR-10000 and YLR-17000 of the 2003, 2004 and 2005 generation, respectively, was assessed in view of welding speed / penetration depth relations and the sensitivity to changes in focal position. This performance was then compared to other solid-state lasers, and it was concluded that high-power fiber lasers significantly outclass their performance in view of penetration and welding speed. Based on these results, various application studies on laser and laser-MIG hybrid welding of steel and aluminium materials, including zinc-coated steel sheets, extruded aluminium profiles (EN-AW 6008, wall thickness of 4 and 8 mm) and pipeline steel X70 (with thicknesses up to 16 mm), have been presented and discussed.
